“Amazing Grace - Level 3A Lesson - pg. 36-37” is a lesson-book arrangement of the traditional melody with words by John Newton. Measures 1–8 present the first half of the main arrangement. The right hand carries the opening melody, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,” while the left hand supports with slow bass notes and simple harmonies. The music begins mezzo forte and uses long slurs, fingerings, and a written cross-over direction, helping the student shape the phrase while managing the hand movement carefully.

Measures 9–16 continue the main statement with the “I once was lost, but now am found” text. The texture remains simple and hymn-like, but the harmony and dynamics become more expressive. The measure 9 sign marks the return point for the later D.S. instruction, and the Fine at measure 16 shows where the main arrangement will end after the repeat structure is completed.

Measures 17–24 present the second strain of the hymn, beginning with “’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear.” The melody now moves lower and involves more left-hand motion, including another written cross-over and turn-under indication. The texture stays slow and controlled, but the hand placement becomes more active than in the opening section.

Measures 25–26 complete the second strain and send the player back with D.S. al Fine. The final phrase, “How precious did that grace appear,” closes the second page section, then the player returns to the sign at measure 9 and continues until the Fine at measure 16. This gives the short arrangement a larger form without adding many new measures.

The optional duet part on page 37 adds a separate flute or piano line above the student arrangement. It follows the same general formal plan, including the sign, Fine, and D.S. al Fine marking, but it gives another player a flowing melodic line that can sit above or around the student’s hymn setting. This makes the page useful not only as solo repertoire but also as a simple ensemble experience.

Interesting fact: “Amazing Grace” has appeared in many films, television shows, memorial scenes, and public ceremonies because it is immediately associated with forgiveness, grief, hope, and spiritual renewal. Its use in movies often depends on that emotional weight: even a simple version of the melody can make a scene feel reflective, redemptive, or solemn.
